How would you live differently if you were told you only had nine months to live? And what would you be willing to do to stay alive? The answer for Jim? "Whatever it takes." Since 2009, family and friends have been left spellbound at his remarkable yet highly controversial approach to diagnosis that gave the husband and father of two, only nine months to live. - There were tears in Jed Thompson's eyes as he looked across the table at his son. For five long years they had toiled, enduring almost incredible hardships, to realize their all-consuming ambition, to own a little farm where they might settle down in peace and comfort, and now it looked as though that dream was in a fair way to be realized. "'Twas a mighty hard fight, boy, but we won and I'm proud of you," said Jed. Two thousand dollars, as nearly as they could reckon it, in gold dust, had been taken from the ground, and now the opportunity of a lifetime had come to them. Old Len Williams was ready to retire and his farm was for sale. $2,000 would buy it. Tom determined to look over the land. Ed Thorpe, all 'round bad man, delivering a letter to Jed, had seen the money and his cupidity was aroused. He determines to steal it and enlists the aid of one Jackson. They descend on the cabin and find Jed alone. Tying him securely, they demand to know the hiding-place of the money. Jed refuses to answer, and Thorpe, thrusting a poker into the stove, threatens to burn the old man's eyes out unless the information is forthcoming. "My boy and I have fought and starved for that money for five long years and all the tortures of the damned won't make me give it up," Jed answers them. As Tom on his way to town passes an isolated cabin, a woman comes to the door and telling him that her husband has just died, asks Tom's aid in burying him. He learns that the dead miner is Jim Lawrence, a good-hearted fellow, who had more than once helped them over rocky days. "I guess dad would like to see Jim before we bury him and besides we will need his help," Tom tells the woman, and promising to be back in a few hours, goes off. As he nears the cabin he hears his father cry out in agony. Thorpe has just drawn the red hot poker across the wrist of Jed, hoping to get a confession from him. Tom rushes to his father's aid and makes short work of the bandits. Deciding the cabin is no longer a safe refuge, they prepare to leave, taking the money with them, hurrying to the widow's aid they help bury her husband. Now it is true that men have fought and bled, suffered and died for womankind, but few indeed are they who would make the sacrifice in its selfishness sublime that these noble-hearted miners made without a whimper. The doctors had told Mrs. Lawrence she was a consumptive. "But," she told Jed, "I don't believe it. I'm strong and I'll work for my little girl." Then the dry hacking cough of the consumptive seized her and Jed and Tom shook their heads gravely. "Ma'am," said Jed, "Y'see your husband was what you might call a silent partner with us and Tom and I have brought his share of the claim." O, noble falsehood. Down on the table plumped the little bags of gold that a few hours before Jed had told the bandits all "the tortures of the damned" could not make him give up. But she was a helpless woman and they were men and could hustle. Back to the cabin they trudged to begin anew the long hard fight; a noble father and courageous son.

After waiting, and almost starving, she takes her little one and returns to her girlhood home. Her mother is happy to see her child again, but the father remains firm in his resolve and turns her out, bolting the door against her. She bids farewell to her child and leaves it at the cottage door. Again she makes her way to the river, but this time throws herself in its shining depths. Hiram is at hand and saves her despite herself. The mother, hearing the baby's cries, brings it into the room. The sight of it, innocent and helpless, softens the father's heart, and when Hiram brings Ann in, he forgives her and takes her home again.

- "True hearts are more than coronets. And simple faith than Norman blood." Two lovers, a young farmer and a pretty but very shy country girl, are seated on a fence which divides their two farms. The young man makes love to her, gives her a tintype of himself, which she is admiring when her father passes along. They tell the old man of their love affair, ask and get his consent to their marriage and secure his promise of assistance in obtaining the sanction of the mother, who is evidently the "power" of the family. They pass two city chaps, apparently surveyors or prospectors, who examine the rocks and soil and are delighted and all excitement over the result of their examination. The old farmer and his daughter with her lover reach the home. The mother is asked for her consent to the marriage. Indifferently she answers "yes," implying that their poverty forces her to agree to the union. In the meantime the prospectors find traces of valuable ore, repair to the farmhouse and agree to purchase the land for a fabulous amount. The papers are signed and delivered, the money paid over. The mother, now that she is wealthy, separates the lovers, and, determining that her daughter shall make a brilliant marriage, orders the young farmer away. The daughter pleads, but to no avail. A lapse of two months finds the former farmer and his family in a gorgeous suite in a Parisian hotel. A French Count is endeavoring to make love to the girl. She resents his attentions, but the ambitious mother aids the suitor and demands that her daughter accept him. The nobleman showers presents upon the girl, among them a costly diamond necklace. The changed surroundings are distasteful alike to father and daughter, and she pleads with her parent to take her back home. At a fancy dress ball the Count is bestowing his attentions, aided by the mother, and in utter hopelessness and despair, the poor girl consents to the union. She leaves the room heartsick, and when alone weeps bitterly over her unfortunate position. Her mother enters, upbraids and scolds her. Unable to further stand this constant nagging from her parent, in desperation she throws the necklace and presents away and determines to remain true and steadfast to her first love. During this period things have changed at the old farm. The adjoining land, that of the young lover, proves to be the one containing the vein of ore, but he, ignorant of the fact, leaves home and starts for Paris to see his former sweetheart. Upon arrival in the city he meets friends who tell him of his good fortune, show a cablegram asking for his whereabouts, and also tell him that his old sweetheart still loves him. She is sent for and the lovers are soon in fond embrace. The father appears shortly afterward and is overjoyed at the turn of affairs. The mother comes in, is about to rave, but father stops her.
